The cylindrical lock that secures most utility meters in North America — explained.
A barrel lock is a tamper-resistant cylindrical lock used across the electric, gas, and water utility trades. It seats inside a meter ring or service collar and is removed only with a matching barrel key.
The smooth, tapered head defeats pliers, vise grips, and most picking attempts. The body is heat-treated and sealed against weather, which is why barrel locks have remained the utility standard for decades.
A barrel key drops over the lock head, engages an internal cam, and rotates the lock free of the meter ring. No external surface to grip, no exposed keyway, no pick path.
