Barrel Locks

What makes an electrical utility barrel lock so good?

Clamping force, sealing, and tamper resistance — the three reasons utilities standardized on barrel locks.

A field-grade barrel lock has to survive a decade outside, defeat casual tampering, and still open cleanly with the correct key. Three properties make that possible.

Clamping force

Quality barrel locks deliver 60+ pounds of clamping pressure. Anything less and freeze-thaw cycles will rock the meter ring loose over time.

Tamper resistance

A short tapered head with no exposed keyway gives an attacker nothing to grip. The most common attack vector is impact — which is why field-grade bodies are heat-treated through.

Sealing

O-ring seals and stainless or brass internals keep the cam mechanism dry. Water intrusion is the #1 cause of premature lock failure in the field.
