Step-by-step on using a barrel lock meter key / Edison meter key to open electrical, gas, and water utility barrel locks.
Opening a barrel lock requires the correct barrel lock meter key — also called an Edison meter key or electrical box ring key — matched to the lock pattern in your service area. Forcing the lock with the wrong tool will damage the cam and ruin both the lock and the key.
Look at the lock head. Note the manufacturer marking, head diameter, and any color or shape coding. Utilities use different patterns by region — confirm yours before reaching for a key.
Drop the barrel key squarely over the lock head. Keep the key axis perfectly parallel to the lock body. A cocked key will not engage the internal cam and can shear the drive pin.
Press the key firmly down until you feel the internal cam engage. Rotate counter-clockwise with steady pressure — never with a cheater bar. The lock will release from the meter ring or collar.
Lift the lock straight out. Inspect the cam and O-ring before reinstalling. Watch our walkthrough on YouTube for live demonstrations on every common pattern we stock.
